Lavender is one of the most recognisable and distinct aroma’s in the world. Name a spa that doesn’t have it wafting through its halls! But, it’s actually been used in the world of beauty and wellness for centuries. So what can it actually do for us? Let’s find out.
What is Lavender?
Lavender, scientifically known as Lavandula, is one of about 30 species of flowering plants in the mint family (mint! Yes really!). Native to the Mediterranean region, lavender thrives in sunny, stony habitats, but it's cultivated across the world, from Europe to Africa to Asia and of course in our own backyard.
Lavender: a brief history.
Historically, lavender was always more than just a fragrant plant. The ancient Egyptians used it for mummification and also as a perfume. The Romans used lavender oils for bathing, cooking, and scenting the air — and also gave it its name: from the Latin verb "lavare," which means "to wash". No surprises there that it’s most common use in baths to help purify the body and spirit.
Benefits of Topical Application of Lavender.
Lavender essential oil is packed with holistic benefits when applied to the skin. It's known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for treating minor burns, insect bites, and small cuts. Its calming scent can also reduce the cortisol levels in the body, which can aid in healing and reducing skin blemishes and of course help to calm the mind.
In beauty products, the use of lavender can be traced back thousands of years. In essential oil form it’s a popular ingredient in skincare products, shampoos, and lotions and it’s thought to promote hair growth, reduce inflammation, and even help combat fungal disorders. Its calming scent also makes it a no-brainer in aromatherapy and spa treatments. It’s also packed with antioxidants which combat cell damage by protecting the skin from environmental damage.
The Power of Lavender Oil
Not content on being just a nice smell, this overachieving plant does much, much more. When inhaled, it interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to help relax the brain and nervous system activity, reducing agitation, anger, aggression, and restlessness. This is precisely why you’ll find it in ingredients listing for calming and sleep products, as it helps promote relaxation and reduce insomnia. But that’s not all: studies have shown that lavender oil can help reduce anxiety and depression, making it a natural remedy for stress relief.
Is it safe for everyone?
Like a lot of essential oils it’s always good to patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin. While it’s generally safe for most people there is always a small chase of skin irritation.
