Madonna was wrong: we’re not living in a material world, we’re living in a stressed one. Between the juggle of work, home, kids, and a million different social media platforms, by the time 9pm rolls around the only kind of self-care most of us can muster is a glass of wine. But it’s amongst all this crazy that you really need to make the time to relax the most. The problem is, short of having a masseuse on hand (we wish!) it can be hard for most people to really unwind… which is why we can all use a little product help.
Here are our favourite products to help you find your way into the zen zone.
Bath Soaks: Find us a better way to relax than a soak in the tub… we’ll wait. As it turns out, science can even prove its positive effects, including boosting your mood, decreasing stress, relieving muscle pain (especially with some magnesium flakes thrown in) and helping with sleep. Apparently, the fact that you’re horizontal in a bath also has something to do with it, because psychologically we associate that position with relaxation. Either way, it makes a convincing case for having (or getting!) a bath.
Try: Lollia Relax Salt Soak or Tokyo Milk Radiant Gem Soak
Essential Oils: Essential oils are powerful stuff. Because the olfactory bulb (the smell receptor) is connected to the limbic system in the brain (the part that controls blood pressure, breathing, memory and stress levels) all smells can have an effect on how you feel. But combining this with the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, means that these amplify the results. For stress, anxiety and to invite in the calm look for lavender, frankincense, vetiver, bergamot and chamomile.
Candles: There’s a reason that churches, massage rooms and yoga studios are illuminated with gentle glow of candle light. It’s both soothing and meditative, allowing you gentle self reflection. Because of all the positive, calming associations with candlelight, everytime we’re around its glow it send signals to the brain to help us relax. The very warmth they create also adds to the calming ambience, and if you combine this with calming scents you’ve got a powerfully zen duo.
