The days are long and hot, the mozzies are out, and everyone is still feeling that familiar holiday lag. Yep, it’s Aussie summer. And it’s not just your wardrobe that should adapt to the warmer weather either - your beauty routine should get a summer shake-up too. Here’s how (and why!) you should be making the switch this summer.
What: Your body moisturiser
Switch to: A extra-nourishing variant with ingredients like shea butter
In winter all the heating and wind will cause dryness in the skin. But in summer, your skin freaks out for a whole host of other reasons. The regular pool swims will dry out your skin and hair, thanks to the chlorine which strips the skin of its natural oils. This means you’ll need to keep it hydrated and moisturised if you want soft skin. Moisturise your body straight after the shower as this will help retain the natural moisture.

What: Your scent
Switch to: A lighter, fresher fragrance in an EDT or cologne
Summer is no place for heady florals or warm smells like amber or musk. Pack these perfumes away for a few months, and instead switch in a lighter, summery floral, a watery, ocean scent, bright summer fruits or even a fresh green fragrance. And that’s not the only thing you should switch. Summer is the perfect time to rotate in a Cologne or EDT, instead of your Parfum. These variants are lighter and fresher, and whilst they may not last as long, they are the perfect accompaniment to the heat.

What: Your lipstick
Switch to: A hydrating lip balm
With all that time in the sun, your lips take a real beating in summer. Dryness, chapping, flakiness - all the fun stuff. Now is not the time to be plastering on your highly-pigmented matte lip, because in summer your lips need extra nourishment. Whip them into shape by using a gentle lip scrub one to two times a week. Then, swap your lippie for a hydrating balm with soothing, moisturising ingredients like cocoa butter or shea, and if you can’t bear to go sans-colour, try a tinted balm for just a hint of hue.
Try: Badger Balm Unscented Lip Balm or Badger Balm Lip Balm Tint in Sunrise
These aren’t the only summer saviours you need in your beauty arsenal, either. Keep these guys in your bag and your skin will be glowing (from health, not burn) all season long.
An aloe vera gel: Because sometimes, despite knowing better, you stayed in the sun just that little bit too long. This will cool and soothe the skin back to health.
A hydrating face oil: Because your skin may produce a little more oil in summer, it’s easy to think that you should skip the moisturiser. Nope. Having oily skin is not the same as having well-moisturised skin, so it’s still needed for hydration and skin barrier protection.
A soothing hand balm: Because they’re out in the sun and harsh elements too - but are often forgotten. Nurse them back to health with a balm that specifically targets dry and sensitive skin, and is free of alcohol and fragrance (which can be drying).
