We’re so busy piling on the layers of clothing and rotating our wardrobes in winter that we often forget about the other things we put on our body: beauty products. But, just like outerwear these need to be switched up in winter too. Here’s how to make the most out of the winter weather, and keep your skin happy too.
Why do I need to change my beauty products in winter?
You might be thinking that you’ll be fine just using the same old stuff you’ve been slapping on in summer, but the truth is, your skin isn’t the same as it was in warmer months — so why would you treat it like it is?
The air in winter is much drier than in summer, with far lower humidity. This, plus the constant heat from round-the-clock heating, and hot showers (the sworn enemy of skin) means that all the moisture is sucked out of our skin. This in turn upsets the skin barrier, causing it to become dehydrated and the skin responds by getting angry, irritated, red, itchy and dry. FUN.
Because of this, your winter skin goal is simple: Hydration, hydration, hydration.
What do I need in my winter skincare kit?
Now that you know hydration and moisture is the goal, you need to look for products and ingredients that will give you just that. In skincare, you’re looking for humectants, which are ingredients that draw in and hold onto moisture, like hyaluronic acid.
You’ll also want to be adding in calming ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, vitamin E, B5 (glycerin), squalane and oat, which will help to nourish, coddle and soothe angry winter skin.
Try to avoid products with a high alcohol content which can be drying, and switch over your formulations too: go for cream or milky cleansers and body washes foams, and richer creams over gels that will also form a nice protective barrier over the skin.Oh, and don’t forget the SPF! Remember just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean the UV rating isn’t high (the cancer council recommended SPF with a UV rating over 3). So you could check the rating every day, or you could just protect yourself regardless and save yourself the hassle (we vote option B).
And remember, your skin doesn’t end at your face, so when we’re talking about winter skin, we mean your body too!
