Despite being thought of as primarily an American celebration, it actually has Celtic origins, borrowing inspiration from a pagan religious festival (called Samhain) where people would come together to celebrate the end of harvest season and mark the beginning of the darker months (sometimes referred to as their new year).
They would dress up and dance around bonfires with the intention of warding off evil spirits and ghosts. However, it wasn’t until much later that it got its name. In the 8th century, the Christian All Saints Day was moved from May 13 to November 1, and in doing so, the night before (October 31) became a holy (aka: “hallowed”) evening… and just like that Halloween was born.
Of course modern Halloween doesn’t generally involve dancing around bonfires, but it does include some epic parties and a chance to unleash your dark side. So, this Halloween we thought we’d play trick or treat with some devilishly good beauty products.
